How to Cut The Cake

Most people have never had to do a cake cutting until it’s their wedding day—where do you even begin? What do you do with your hands? How do you get it in each other’s mouths?

You’re standing in front of everyone, the lights are on you. All eyes are on you. It’s showtime.

Thank God you read this article beforehand telling you EXACTLY what to do. People will think you’re an absolute pro. Just stick to these steps:

6 Steps to cutting the cake

1. Pick one person who is going to be cutting the cake and one person who is going to be guiding the cutter’s hands. The cutter will wrap both hands around the knife and the guider will wrap both hands around the cutter’s hands. Together, you will cut the cake.

2. Decide if you’ll be cutting the top tier or the bottom tier. Some couples like to save the top tier of the cake and freeze it for the upcoming first anniversary. If that is the case for you, do not cut the top tier. If you won’t be saving it, then most of the time, cutting into the top tier is easier.

3. Cut a small triangle piece. It doesn’t need to be a large slice, perfect for all to see. The smaller that you make it, the easier it is for you to cut it and get it out in tact.

4. Together, use the cake server to slide the cake out and place it on the plate. You may need to use the knife or a finger to help hold it together in it’s voyage to the plate.

5. Decide ahead of time if you want to feed each other with your hands, with forks, how you want to feed each other, etc. Most people use the forks to simply feed each other the bite of cake.

6. Don’t forget to kiss after you feed each other the cake. Photographers want that photo and you will, too!

BONUS TIP: If you or your spouse goes for the smash route, KEEP YOUR COMPOSURE—Keep smiling, laugh through it, wipe it off of each other and you can even do a cute, little kiss/nibble to help clean up the mess. If you are going to smash, smash gently. No one wants a broken nose on wedding day. Cheers!
